I went for the orientation of my Internship, and it turns out that not only was the application process more competitive than it seemed (I never felt any pressure) but the whole thing is more intense than I thought. I'm NOT the oldest one there, far from it, and a lot of the other interns are either in film programs or getting masters or whatever. At least one of them graduated from Duke, so apparently my school doesn't make me unique either. Standing out is going to require actual work and dedication, and I'm going to have to be focused, proactive, and very very good.
On the plus side apparently we get 3 free classes, which I'm definitely going to do. So that's good.
Clearly I didn't quite understand what I've gotten myself into, but I'm starting to. Oh well, I'm up for a challenge.
